Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) today kicked off a series of special events to celebrate 10 years of vehicle production, including an exclusive concert for team members, elected officials and community leaders.

At the concert, HMMA President and Chief Executive Officer Jun Ha Kim offered his perspective on reaching this significant point in the plant’s history, “Ten years of producing high-quality Hyundai vehicles is a great milestone, and a major accomplishment for both our team and our partners around the world who come together to build our products.” Kim added, “This organization has come a long way – from never having built an automobile just 10 years ago, to now building more than 400,000 vehicles per year for the North American market.”

May 20, 2015, will officially mark the 10th year of production at the HMMA, and over that period the plant has produced over 2.9 million vehicles.

Choong Ho Kim, President of Hyundai Motor and Chief Executive Officer, also added his congratulation with, “Ten years ago, Hyundai Motor Company built the plant here in Alabama as part of its efforts to become America’s most beloved and respected brand among the citizens and customers in the world’s foremost automotive market. Since then, HMMA has developed into North America’s leading production plant in terms of productivity and quality.”

When Hyundai Motor chose to build its first U.S. assembly plant in Alabama in April 2002, the plan was for a $1.1 billion investment and the creation of 2,000 jobs. Today, the plant’s total investment has reached $1.8 billion and employment is approximately 3,600 people. The many businesses who joined Hyundai Motor in the River Region employ a further 6,000 people within the associated supply chain. All in all, Hyundai Motor’s presence in the area has directly or indirectly created more than 35,000 jobs in Alabama.

Hyundai Motor operates plants in US (HMMA), China (BHMC), India (HMI), Brazil (HMB), Russia (HMMR), Turkey (HAOS), Czech (HMMC) and Korea, with total global production close to five million units in 2014.

Production milestones

The Montgomery plant was commissioned on May 20, 2005, after a three-year construction period. When Hyundai Motor Company decided to construct the plant in 2002, it became the automaker’s first passenger vehicle plant in the United States. HMMA added production of the Santa Fe Crossover Utility Vehicle in 2006.

By November 2009, HMMA added a second engine plant to build the all-new Theta four-cylinder engine for the re-designed Sonata sedan. The plant also assembled its 1,000,000th vehicle in November 2009.

In November 2010, the assembly operation transitioned to an all-sedan production schedule, with the addition of Elantra sedan. During 2010, HMMA reached its original production capacity target of 300,000 vehicles per year.

In May 2011, the modification and expansion of HMMA original engine plant was completed to assemble the NU four-cylinder engine for the Elantra sedan. Two months later, HMMA built its 1,000,000th Sonata for the North American market.

In September 2012, HMMA added a third shift to meet the growing demand for Sonata and Elantra sedans and increased the plant’s operating capacity to 400,000 vehicles per year.
