In conjunction with the 2013 Plug-In Conference, an SAE Combo Fast Charging station for electric vehicles has been installed in San Diego.
The new charging station was unveiled during the conference, which was held Sept. 30-Oct. 3. It is the first public charging station that complies with SAE International’s electric vehicle fast-charging standard, “SAE J1772™ – SAE Electric Vehicle and Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle Conductive Charge Coupler,” which covers the general physical, electrical, functional and performance requirements to facilitate conductive charging of EV/PHEV vehicles. SAE J1772™ is the basis for the Combined Charging System (CCS) which allows for multiple types of charging, including both AC and DC using just one plug.
Constructed by NRG, the new charging station is located at the Fashion Valley Mall. The station can charge a depleted electric vehicle battery to 80 percent state of charge in less than 30 minutes and can be used with any electric vehicle equipped with the CCS.
The Chevrolet Spark, which is available in California and Oregon, and the BMW i3 are the first electric vehicles in the United States to offer the SAE J1772™ based fast-charge connector as a vehicle option. The Combo Fast Charging station provides AC and DC charging via a single port on the vehicle. The new station allows electricity to flow at a faster rate, which will make electric vehicles more convenient for longer trips by allowing faster charging times.
Audi, BMW, Daimler, Chrysler, Ford, GM, Porsche and Volkswagen have announced they will adopt the SAE combo fast charge connector standard for both the US and European markets.
