The second episode of Transportation Matters, the CEO podcast of Daimler Trucks & Buses, is about sustainability in the transport sector, one of the major challenges of our time. Martin Daum, CEO of Daimler Trucks & Buses has met with Joschka Fischer, former Vice Chancellor and Secretary of State of the Federal Republic of Germany. Having left active politics a while ago, Fischer remains an attentive analyst of the political business and keeps on campaigning for environmental protection and a sustainable climate policy. Transportation Matters is available on all popular streaming platforms and www.daimler.com/transportation-matters/en.

„Ecological change will not be free of charge. This challenge will not just apply to businesses but also to consumers. And we need a massive structural change which will take a good deal of time,“ stresses Joschka Fischer in his podcast conversation with Martin Daum, member of the board of Daimler AG and responsible for Trucks & Buses.

“In the automobile industry we are tackling this challenge. If we do not start today already, we will never arrive at a decisive solution. I expect to see a framework in place, which supports this entire approach. However, we also need awareness of the fact that, in the end, it will make transportation and mobility more expensive than today. We cannot live with an illusion that nothing will change and everything will be better. That does not work – neither with your personal health nor with our planet,“ says Martin Daum.

According to Joschka Fischer, the climate change does not only bear economical risks but also offers considerable opportunities: “We are under immense pressure to get things moving, particularly as a result of the unforeseeable consequences caused by our industrial and consumer society. This pressure to act is likely to increase. And this pressure to act will lead to competition: Who responds in the best, most rapid and most efficient manner will leverage the market opportunities of the future.”

In this second episode of Transportation Matters, Joschka Fischer, Germany’s Green Party methusalem, and Martin Daum discuss how society, politics and economics have to cooperate for a sustainable climate policy, why climate change does not come for free and why there is a chicken-egg-dilemma when it comes to hydrogen powered vehicles.

The conversation was in German, the respective subtitles in English are available on YouTube.
