ANCAP safety ratings were today announced for the new Subaru Outback and Subaru Liberty. Both models, on sale in January 2015, scored the maximum 5 star ANCAP safety rating. These 5 star ANCAP safety ratings apply to all Outback and Liberty variants.

Both cars scored highly in all areas of physical crash test assessment and come with dual frontal, knee, side chest and head-protecting (curtain) airbags. Good performance was also recorded in the whiplash and pedestrian protection tests.

“Since 2007, Subaru has built a solid reputation for vehicle safety, with 5 star ANCAP safety ratings available across its fleet. This continues today with these latest results,” said ANCAP Chairman, Mr Lauchlan McIntosh.

In recognising Subaru’s continued achievements in offering consumers with a high level of safety, Mr McIntosh added, “This is particularly encouraging given both of these new models have been assessed against ANCAP’s more stringent 2015 requirements.”

While the Outback and Liberty meet ANCAP’s requirements for the inclusion of safety assist technologies (SAT), Subaru’s collision avoidance system, EyeSight, and Attention Assist are offered only as options on the Outback. EyeSight is standard on all Liberty variants. Daytime running lights and tyre pressure monitoring are features offered on models sold overseas however these features are not available on Australasian variants.

“It is good to see safety assist technologies becoming increasingly available, but ANCAP encourages Subaru, and all other manufacturers, to include these technologies as standard in all models and all markets. We know Australians value safety very highly so the same safety features should be included as standard in all countries in which the cars are sold,” said Mr McIntosh.
