US strikes Japan deal: Europe optimistic, Detroit concerned

After weeks of negotiation, a US-Japan tariff deal has been struck, but automotive industry reactions to its content are mixed. By Will Girling

After weeks of seemingly fruitless negotiations, the US and Japan finally announced a new trade agreement, just ten days before a 25% tariff on all the latter’s exports would have been implemented. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba confirmed on 22 July 2025 that automotive products will now face a reduced 15% rate.
