US expands steel tariffs to include exhausts, AC, EV parts

The latest tariffs are intended to “revitalise” local production, but the US currently lacks capacity for certain specialised parts. By Stewart Burnett

The US Department of Commerce has expanded steel and aluminium tariffs to cover 407 additional products, including automotive exhaust system parts and electrical steel essential for electric vehicle (EV) production. The steep 50% duties on steel and aluminium content will take effect immediately, impacting over US$200bn in annual imports.
