Toyota puts the brakes on production/sales targets

Toyota's muted forecasts for both sales and production this year could clear the way for Volkswagen to pull ahead in the race for global leadership

Toyota may have led the industry in total sales volumes this year, but it is prepared for a year of stagnation at best and double-digit decline at worst. The company ended 2014 with global sales of 10.23 million vehicles, compared to Volkswagen's 10.14 million and General Motors' 9.92 million. However, its forecasts for both sales and production for the 2015 calendar year reflect expected challenges across Toyota, Daihatsu and Hino, both at home and abroad. This could clear the way for Volkswagen to pull ahead in the race for global dominance.
