As an automotive lightweighting material, carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) is well ahead of other materials such as aluminium and advanced high strength steels (AHSS). The material is about five times as strong as steel and twice as stiff, while weighing two-thirds less. Unfortunately, CFRP costs much more than steel or even aluminium.
