Most automakers see high definition maps as essential for autonomous cars

Most people will be intrinsically aware of the limited accuracy of standard definition (SD) maps, whether that is an Uber driver showing up several doors down, or pacing the streets in search of a confused Deliveroo courier. Unluckier still are those who know the pain of map malfunctions, such as attempts to lead drivers down closed or unsuitable roads, a problem so common that road-signs urging drivers to ignore sat-navs and brush up their own map-reading skills have long been a feature in developed markets.
