Trojan horse software, malware, computer viruses and hacking – all terms with which the public is familiar, thanks to many years of personal computing. Indeed, a whole industry exists in PC protection, an industry that is made up of numerous household names.
Connected car and connectivity – terms with which the public is now becoming accustomed. Surprisingly, however, little connection is currently made between the two industries. Despite some high profile automotive security breaches affecting major OEMs – BMW’s recent ConnectedDrive scare and the 2013 cracking of the Megamos Crypto code which underpins the security of numerous luxury vehicles including Porsche, Bentley, Audi and Lamborghini – these are generally seen as rarities; the existence of a widespread threat is not yet fully established.
