Japan COTY sounds wake-up call for domestic brands

It's not so much the origin of the brand that matters as what the model can offer, writes Megan Lampinen

Imports are slowly but surely gaining ground in Japan, where domestic brands have traditionally dominated. It's not been an easy journey. Ford found the barriers so daunting that it decided to withdraw entirely. At the time, Ford spokesperson Neal McCarthy described Japan as “the most closed, developed auto economy in the world." In general, imports account for less than 6% of Japan’s yearly new car market.
