Differing opinions about the benefits and drawbacks of diesel as a vehicle fuel have led to increasingly confusing message for consumers, particularly in Europe. It is still unclear what longer term impact the Volkswagen diesel emissions scandal will have on vehicle sales, on public opinion and on regulatory strategy. Some cities across Europe, such as Paris, are intent on becoming diesel-free by 2020.
Into this uncertain environment comes renewable diesel. The European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) recently approved a new standard for paraffinic diesel fuel that is created from synthesis or hydro-treatment. Called EN 15940, the standard is set to be published by all CEN members by the end of 2016. This presents considerable growth potential for renewable diesel fuels.
