Does battery electric offer enough to draw trucking companies away from diesel?

Truck manufacturers across the board are pushing to bring battery electric models to fruition, but will the payoff justify the struggle? By Betti Hunter

Within the past decade, battery electric vehicles (BEVs) have moved from the fringes of powertrain technology and are skirting the edges of the mainstream. Now the mainstream trucking industry, which once left electrification largely to the handful of start-ups leading the way in BEV development, is keen to get in on the act. Major truck players across the world are turning their attention to creating electric delivery, pick-up and long-haul models, in part to keep ahead of industry-shakers such as Tesla. Moves towards electrification are also driven by the rapid introduction of stricter emissions standards as governments worldwide attempt to reduce CO2 levels.
