Recalls remain a highly visible feature of the automotive world, with the potential to ruin the public reputations of OEMs and suppliers. Takata’s defective airbag inflators, for instance, continues to rumble on. Senators in the US recently urged the Obama administration to force expansion of recalls fitted with Takata’s ammonium nitrate-propelled airbags, and described timeframes decided on by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as “an outrageous dereliction of duty.” Takata airbags have been linked to ten deaths and more than a 100 injuries. To date, 14 automakers have recalled 24 million vehicles.
