Steel built the automotive industry, and as such, the tools, facilities and knowledge developed to manufacture cars have been built around steel. Increased pressure to lightweight vehicles means greater use of alternative materials, but non-steel suppliers face two obstacles. One is manufacturing facilities’ legacy systems – the traditional tooling and processes used to build cars. The second is a lack of familiarity.
