BASF has grand ambitions for high-volume vehicle production

High strength plastic costs remain prohibitive, but BASF’s recent collaboration with Ford and Magna demonstrates the progress being made

Metal-replacement in vehicle manufacturing continues at a slow but steady pace. In October 2015, chemical giant BASF partnered with Magna to help develop a carbon composite grille opening reinforcement (GOR). The part, which is 24% lighter than the plastic metal hybrid previously used, has been adopted by Ford to secure the carbon fibre reinforced plastic grille on the 2016 Shelby GT350.
