A new report on OEMs active in the clean diesel car market by Pike Research, qualifies clean diesel cars as those that meet the limits for NOx or particulate matter emissions set by the US Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 2 standards or the EU’s Euro 5 standards. Clean diesel is also the standard in Japan, Australia, and South Korea, and is coming to other important car markets like Brazil, notes Pike.
The OEM in the Pike Pulse report include not only those that are leading the light diesel vehicle market today, but also those poised to capture more market share, either in the largest clean diesel market today, Europe, or in markets that are beginning to open up to clean diesel, such as North America.
The current leader in the market, Volkswagen Group, is well established in Europe and has the potential to grow its sales in North America and other new markets. The other European OEMs are also current leaders in clean diesel, but not all of them show the same commitment to expanding into new markets. Mazda and GM are among the companies aiming to be successful in new markets such as North America or Asia Pacific.
The Pike Research report evaluates 13 diesel vehicle manufacturers ranking among the top 20 in terms of global sales and which also target a range of regional markets. Pike Research rates ten of these companies as shown below, on 12 criteria for strategy and execution, including vision, go-to-market strategy, partners, production strategy, technology, geographic reach, sales, marketing, and distribution, product performance, product quality and reliability, product portfolio, pricing, and staying power.
