Aluminium set to get more cost competitive

The steel industry will need to pay close attention to developments in aluminium if it doesn’t want to lose more ground in the automotive space. By Xavier Boucherat

The average vehicle in the US is now composed of around 10% aluminium parts, with components such as engine heads and radiators reliant on the lightweight material. Year-on-year uptake from OEMs since the turn of the century has seen aluminium permeate even price sensitive segments.
