US media sources have reported that Magna Sealing and Glass Systems, a manufacturing division of Magna Exteriors and Interiors, has developed a new sunroof system that is targeted at luxury cars, although an official unveiling is believed to be still some way in the future.

According to Bruce Warren, General Manager of Magna’s Holland Township facility, as quoted by mlive.com: “We’re not ready to roll it out other than to say it has quite a bit of appeal to the customers we’ve disclosed it to.”

Warren added that a new production line for the system, which has an investment cost of US$10.1m, will result in the addition of 177 new jobs through 2016, when it will be in full production. The line is to be installed in a 100,000sq-ft building currently used for warehousing.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) has approved a US$1.2m business development incentive deal for the programme while Magna is also planning to seek a 12-year tax abatement for the new production line.

The mlive.com report, citing Warren, says the new sunroof system will feature new electric shading technologies that will replace the traditional roller blind but will not use electrochromic technology as used by Gentex in its self-dimming rear-view mirrors.

Warren was further quoted as saying: “Magna Sealing and Glass is thrilled with the collaborative work of MEDC, Holland Charter Township and Lakeshore Advantage to help advance our project and provide continued job growth in the Holland area.”
