On 23 June 2016, 51% of those who participated in the UK's EU referendum voted to leave the European Union (EU), causing upset among pro-EU supporters and headaches for many businesses. The dust has settled, and the automotive industry has had a chance to respond, with many companies making public statements regarding their expectations for the future.
Appearing shortly after the vote for Brexit at a Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) conference, Erik Jonnaert, Secretary General for the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), said that he did not envisage a short-term decline on UK car sales following Brexit.
But what about the wider European automotive industry? How will Brexit impact OEMs that import to the UK, and what will it mean for regulations that govern the UK and EU? Speaking to Automotive World, Jonnaert discusses the wider impacts of Brexit and described how the automotive industry is slowly starting to ready itself. One of the big themes, he explains, is that the situation is still shrouded in uncertainty.
