Safety and diversity top GM shareholder concerns

Mary Barra may have been keen to touch on achievements in connectivity, autonomy and alternative mobility but shareholder concerns lay elsewhere, writes Megan Lampinen

Forget megatrends and market share - safety and diversity emerged as key investor concerns at General Motors' annual shareholders meeting in Detroit. In fact, Chief Executive Mary Barra kicked off the event with a comment about safety, noting: "Safety is a very important part of everything we do. We have made a clear commitment to lead not only in terms of product but also workplace safety." While she then went on to explain about the fire alarm exit procedures, safety was clearly at the top of shareholders' minds and resurfaced frequently in their comments to management.
