IAA specialist events: Reducing CO₂ emissions from road freight transport, LNG and more
Commercial vehicles are becoming ever more efficient and intelligent. Manufacturers and suppliers have always continued to optimise their vehicles. This means first and foremost lower and lower fuel consumption and even greater connectivity. And alternative fuels will also be used more in the future. All the issues surrounding commercial vehicles of the future will be discussed at the 65th IAA Commercial Vehicles.
Reducing CO2 emissions from road freight transport
“Reducing CO2 emissions from road freight transport” will be explored by a symposium organised jointly by the German Association of the Automotive Industry (VDA), the International Road Transport Union (IRU) and the trade journal Verkehrsrundschau. Representatives from academia, politics and business will discuss the options for road freight transport that is even more climate-friendly.
A welcome from VDA Managing Director Dr Kay Lindemann will be followed by Humberto Delgado Rosa, Director of the European Commission’s DG Climate Action, talking about the EU’s strategy for reducing CO2 emissions from heavy commercial vehicles. Technological solutions from a truck manufacturer’s view will be the topic for Sven Ennerst, Head of Product Engineering and Global Procurement at Daimler Trucks. Uwe Sasse, Member of the Board at Fahrzeugwerk Bernard Krone GmbH, will report from a trailer manufacturer’s perspective. Erik Østergaard, CEO of the Danish Transport and Logistics Association (DTL), will present the Danish approach to saving fuel. Jean Jacques Hebting, Managing Director of Transports Hebting, will describe the practical experience of a fleet operator. Martin Schmied from INFRAS will speak on the importance of measuring emissions, reporting, foot-printing and benchmarking, before the participants move on to a panel discussion. Michael Nielsen from the IRU will conclude the event with an outlook for the future.
The symposium will take place on Friday, 26 September 2014, from 10.00 h to 12.30 h, in Room 3A of the Convention Center on the Hannover trade fair grounds. André Kranke, deputy editor-in-chief of the Verkehrsrundschau, will host the event.
LNG – the alternative fuel for commercial vehicles
Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is an alternative to diesel in road freight traffic. The symposium entitled “LNG – the alternative fuel for commercial vehicles”, organised by the VDA and the trade publication Lastauto Omnibus, will focus on the new fuel. LNG is especially attractive because it is highly efficient and has the energy density required for heavy freight traffic. The symposium will examine opportunities and possible applications.
VDA Managing Director Dr Ulrich Eichhorn will welcome the visitors, after which Magda Kopczynska, from the European Commission’s DG MOVE, will present the EU’s view of LNG. Dr Veit Steinle, Director UI in the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI), will describe the perspective of the German Government, and Dr Manfred Schuckert, Head of Global Regulatory Strategy at Daimler, will speak about LNG as a real-world option. He will be followed by Christian Gruber, Manager Engineering Research Prototypes at MAN Truck & Bus AG, explaining the possibilities for LNG from his company’s viewpoint. Additional presentations will cover the EU’s LNG Blue Corridors project, the expansion of Europe’s LNG infrastructure, initial practical experience with LNG, and refuelling technologies. The meeting will finish with a discussion.
The symposium will be held on Monday, 29 September 2014, from 10.00 h to 15.00 h, in Room 1A of the Convention Center on the Hannover trade fair grounds. It will be hosted by Thomas Rosenberger, editor-in-chief of Lastauto Omnibus.
Commercial vehicles of the future
One of the central topics in the commercial vehicle industry is connectivity. More and more telematics solutions in particular will be used in vehicles. In future connected trucks will become an integral part of modern logistics processes. The VDA is therefore holding the symposium “Commercial vehicles of the future” in co-operation with the Commercial Vehicle Cluster, the publisher ETM Verlag and the trade newspaper trans aktuell.
VDA Managing Director Klaus Bräunig will open the symposium. Then Eveline Lemke, Minister of Economic Affairs, Climate Protection, Energy and Regional Planning of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, will examine the efficiency and connectivity of commercial vehicles of the future. Prof. Peter Liggesmeyer, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Experimental Software Engineering IESE, will present the Roadmap 2030 of the Commercial Vehicle Alliance. The programme will end with a panel discussion entitled “Commercial Vehicles of the Future – Interdisciplinarity and networking are the main challenges”. The participants will include Minister Eveline Lemke and Prof. Liggesmeyer, alongside representatives of commercial vehicle manufacturers and suppliers.
The event will take place on Monday, 29 September 2014, from 16.00 h to 19.00 h, in Room 3A of the Convention Center on the Hannover trade fair grounds, and will be hosted by Markus Braun of ETM Verlag.
The 65th IAA Commercial Vehicles is organised by the VDA and will run from 25 September to 2 October 2014. Under the slogan “Driving the future” it will present numerous world, European and German premieres along with a large number of specialist events and special shows.
