Adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) in the passenger car market is growing at a slow but steady rate, but times remain tough for EV manufacturers in the commercial vehicle (CV) market. An announcement from the Tanfield Group in September 2015 revealed that Smith Electric Vehicles is in financial difficulty, despite benefitting from US$30m in stimulus package funds. Further evidence of difficulty emerged when the Kansas City Aviation Department, which leases Smith land for its Kansas facility, announced in October 2015 that the OEM owes it over half a million dollars.
