COMMENT: For Russia’s auto industry, the only certainty is uncertainty

BY IAN HENRY. Russia’s new vehicle market could fall by 25% in 2015, which would place serious question marks over recent and future investment in the country

In 2010, just over 400,000 cars and LCVs were produced in Russia by the international brands and their local partners, with close to double this produced by the domestic players, mainly AvtoVAZ. A year later, the international brands’ volume was around 750,000, surpassing the local brands’ total. In 2012, international brands’ output exceeded 1 million units and although the Russian market slowed in late 2014, these brands still produced around 1.2 million vehicles in Russia last year.
