COMMENT: Double-drive US tractors – who really needs them?

Truck operators and drivers in North America are notoriously conservative in their choice of vehicle specifications, none more than in the configuration of heavy-duty Class 8 articulated tractor chassis. Those tractor-trailer combinations, rated for operation at the federal maximum gross weight of 80,000lb (36.3 tonnes), invariably comprise a three-axled tractor hauling a tandem-axle semi-trailer.
