The 29th Techno Classica in Essen has opened its doors, offering old-timer fans everything the heart desires – chrome-trimmed classics on two wheels and four, sought-after spares and petroleum-fueled discussion – until April 9. Opel Classic and the enthusiasts from Alt Opel IG (vintage Opel owners club) will meet and greet the fans in Hall 2 at the Opel stand, which has been designed like a piazza to reflect the approachability the brand is famous for.

“The Opel Flagships” is this year’s motto at the Techno Classica. The legendary pre-WWII Admiral that celebrated its premiere in 1937 is the spearhead of the Opel fleet. It is hard to believe that the wonderful art déco style chassis is already 80 years old. The journey through time continues with the two millionth Opel produced, a 1956 Kapitän. Representatives of the famous KAD models (Kapitän-Admiral-Diplomat) such as a 1968 Diplomat A and a 1970 Opel Admiral – two true street cruisers – are also present. The 1978 Senator A is a classic design from the more matter-of-fact 1970s, whereas the new Opel flagship, the Insignia Grand Sport, demonstrates Opel’s current design philosophy of “Sculptural artistry meets German precision”.

The Opel Ampera-e will be the star attraction at the “e-mobility” special exhibition. The new range-champion is THE electric car or ‘Das Elektroauto’, with a revolutionary officially certified NEDC range of 520 kilometers (measured in accordance with the New European Driving Cycle). The 4.17 meter long Ampera-e also offers plenty of space for up to five passengers plus trunk space of 381 liters (1,274 liters when the seats are folded down), which is more than some compact class cars. Instant torque of 360 Nm is responsible for the electrifying temperament of the Ampera-e. The output of the electric motor is equivalent to 150 kW/204 hp (PS). This enables the Opel Ampera-e to accelerate from 0 to 50 km/h in just 3.2 seconds and from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.3 seconds. Mid-range acceleration from 80 to 120 km/h, which is especially important for overtaking maneuvers, is completed in just 4.5 seconds.

With performance like this, the Ampera-e can compete with the high-powered sports cars and luxury sedans at the Techno Classica, underling that the new electric Opel will become one of the classics of tomorrow.
