Genk redundancies serve as reminder of downturn repercussions

Europe's automotive industry is recovering but the full social and economic impact of the restructuring is not yet over.

While the European car market has shown considerable signs of improvement over the past few months, the repercussions from its prolonged downturn are still being felt. The European Commission’s (EC) Budgets Committee has recommended that workers soon to be laid off at Ford’s Genk plant in Belgium receive government funding to help them find new jobs. It has put forward the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) aid recommendation but this still requires approval from both Parliament as a whole and the Council of Ministers.
