Automotive World’s latest special report looks at the ways in which automakers and suppliers are responding to climate change.

Although automakers increasingly focus their sustainability strategies on climate change—an issue which they are keen to prioritise—they are often accused of a lack of ambition. That said, their strategies align closely with guidance laid out by climate change experts, indicating a desire to be part of a solution, not a problem.

A number of strategies are being deployed by the automakers. VW, for example, has committed US$33bn to electric vehicles (EVs) over the next four years, and has teamed up with BMW, Honda and Ford to voluntarily meet California’s stricter emissions standards across the whole of the US, despite Trump rolling back Obama-era targets.

Other automakers have taken a different path; GM, FCA, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai-Kia are among those which have formed the ‘Coalition of Sustainable Automotive Regulation’, a group which supported Trump’s softer stance on emissions standards.

In Europe, automakers are generally more ambitious, with Daimler, VW and Volvo all aiming for carbon neutrality between 2039 and 2050, in line with the EU’s target of climate neutrality by 2050.
