Matthew Jaster of Power Transmission Engineering spoke with Dr. Mircea Gradu, Velodyne’s Sr. Vice President of Quality and Validation, about Velodyne’s initiative to bring the AV community together to identify requirements and methods for lidar sensor testing and validation.

In discussing the initiative, Gradu said:

With the autonomous vehicle (AV) industry in a nascent stage, now is an excellent time to support the development and testing efforts of automotive OEMs and Tier 1 suppliers.

“Velodyne is a strong voice within the industry promoting the safe deployment of AVs, including their comprehensive testing and validation based on a common set of real-world scenarios and relevant corner cases.”

The article discusses how Velodyne is collaborating with industry representatives, academia and lawmakers to determine how lidar technology can impact the automotive industry. The objective is to create a self-driving automobile ride that will take passengers to their required destinations safely, comfortably and efficiently, notes Jaster.
