Bernhard Mattes, VDA-president: “In the coming weeks negotiations should go on. Reliable and long-term solutions need to be found. The partnership between Europe and the US is crucial, politically and economically. Therefore, the conflict has to be prevented from escalating. America should be aware that new tariffs are likely to harm American companies and consumers, too. The German automotive industry will keep on advocating for free and fair trade and will oppose protectionism. Beyond that, the current situation demonstrates that an American-European trade agreement, consistent with WTO standards, would both be necessary and make sense.”
