Under the microscope: Mercedes-Benz S 450: With intelligent charging

The new systematically electrified six-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-Benz S 450 (also as a 4MATIC model) generates 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm of torque

With the introduction of the integrated starter-generator under the name EQ Boost in the facelift S‑Class in the S 450 (combined fuel consumption: 7.5-7.3 l/100 km; combined CO2 emissions: 171-166 g/km)[20], the 48-Volt on-board electrical system also celebrated its world premiere. The starter generator handles hybrid functions such as boost or energy recovery and makes fuel savings possible that were previously reserved for the high-voltage hybrid technology.

The new systematically electrified six-cylinder engine in the Mercedes-Benz S 450 (also as a 4MATIC model) generates 270 kW (367 hp) and 500 Nm of torque. EQ Boost provides a further 250 Nm of torque as well as 16 kW (22 hp) at short notice.

Intelligent, forced induction that includes an electric booster compressor, as well as the integrated starter generator (ISG) provide outstanding power delivery without turbo lag. In addition, the engine starts extremely quickly and comfortably. Turing the engine on and off with the start-stop function, for example at traffic lights or when coasting, is almost imperceptible.

In addition, systematic electrification dispenses with the need for a belt drive for ancillary components at the front of the engine, which reduces its overall length. The slim design as an in-line engine, together with the physical separation of intake/exhaust, creates space for a near-engine emission control system. The 48-volt on-board power supply serves not only high power consumers such as the water pump and air-conditioning compressor, but also the Integrated Starter Generator (ISG), which also supplies energy to the battery by means of highly efficient energy recuperation.
