SEAT is partnering with Philips Lighting to light up its Martorell plant in the most eco-friendly manner. Both companies have signed an agreement to replace all the exterior light sources of the Martorell facilities with connected LED lighting, which is more efficient and sustainable, enabling the company to save 80% on energy consumption, amounting to over 900 MWh per year. This action is in line with SEAT’s environmental strategy, called ECOMOTIVE FACTORY, aimed at having a manufacturing plant that is efficient, sustainable and eco-friendly.

The project includes replacing the current light fixtures found on the factory’s internal roadways and perimeter parking lots with LED cluster lights, which consume around 80% less electricity than conventional light bulbs and have a longer service life of around 45,000 hours, which amounts to five times longer than conventional bulbs. When implemented, more than 1,200 fixtures will get replaced with a more environmentally efficient system. If they were all lined up, they would cover a distance of 30 km, enough to provide sustainable lighting to nearly three times the length of Avenida Diagonal in Barcelona.

As explained by Joan Carles Casas, who is the head of the ECOMOTIVE FACTORY, “SEAT’s goal is to achieve a 25% reduction in the resource consumption per vehicle produced by the year 2018. This involves lowering key indicators such as energy consumption, CO2 emissions, waste generation, water consumption and solvent emissions”. “The partnership with Philips Lighting enables us to move towards a factory that is more efficient and sustainable” he added.

“The energy efficiency project at the SEAT factory in Martorell has been carried out using a Light As A Service model, which enables us to take light further, making Philips Lighting a partner of SEAT in the provision of services” says David Martínez, head of Lighting for Industry at Philips Lighting. “At the same time, this new model responds to a paradigm shift in society and businesses, where sustainability and patterns of circular economy playa n increasingly prominent role.”

Remote management of exterior lighting

In addition, this project enables SEAT’s maintenance teams to control the company’s individual lighting needs online and in real time, as well as manage the inventory with a geolocation system of the fixtures. Using the Philips CityTouch point-to-point system, SEAT fully controls the installation, obtains direct information from each light fixture and can supervise improvements in energy expenditure management as well as in maintenance.

SEAT is currently assessing the replacement of the interior lighting in the production and logistics facilities and office areas with more efficient technologies. With this measure, which SEAT expects to implement in upcoming years, the company’s Martorell complex would have a fully eco-conscious lighting system in place.
