Federal-Mogul Corporation’s Powertrain Segment has developed a versatile new harness protection sleeve that delivers multiple benefits, including abrasion resistance, flexibility and ease of application.

Called FastWrap™ 2305, the new product features integral adhesive strips for quick installation and ships in flat packaging to reduce logistics complexity and storage costs.
Throughout a vehicle, wire harnesses can be exposed to sharp edges or mechanical abrasion where there is contact with other components. In these cases, protective sleeving and wraps are often utilized to safeguard sensitive wiring from damage.

FastWrap’s patent-pending high density weave construction delivers this type of mechanical abrasion protection while maintaining exceptional flexibility for ease of installation and routing in even the most crowded engine compartments. The fabric, a combination of polyester monofilament and multifilament yarns, is rated up to 150°C and is resistant to all normal engine fluids.

“FastWrap’s flat profile provides a significant advantage to customers,” explained Cassie Malloy, product development team leader, Federal-Mogul Systems Protection. “It is delivered in an almost flat form, which can help reduce both logistics costs and the storage footprint at the customer’s facility.”

FastWrap features two adhesive strips integral to installation, each covered during shipping and storage. The first strip assists the operator during installation by adhering to the wire harness for accurate location of the product. The operator’s hands are then free to wrap the harness and secure the closure with the second adhesive strip, ensuring full protection of the harness without the need for additional tape or ties.

“FastWrap’s novel construction not only makes installation quicker and more accurate, but the unique adjustable overlap design accommodates considerable variation in wire bundle diameter, allowing vehicle manufacturers to meet all their abrasion protection requirements,” said Malloy. “This wrappable, self-adhesive design covers all wire bundle diameters from 8mm to 40mm with just three product sizes.”

Once installed, FastWrap retains its compact profile and high flexibility, remaining firmly closed to provide full abrasion protection, even when flexed or curved around objects.
FastWrap can accommodate automotive, heavy-duty and off-highway applications. It was developed at Federal-Mogul’s Systems Protection global innovation center in Exton, Pennsylvania, and is sold under Federal-Mogul’s respected Bentley-Harris brand. Demonstrating early success, FastWrap has already been released by a major European vehicle manufacturer. Pilot scale manufacturing is currently underway with series production scheduled for later this year.

Federal-Mogul will present FastWrap 2305 at the IAA Show in Frankfurt from September 10-13, 2013.
