In 2012, for the sixth consecutive year Fiat has been confirmed as the brand with the lowest average CO2 emissions in Europe among the best-selling automotive brands, with an average of 119,8 g/km. The record is certified by JATO Dynamics, the world’s leading provider of automotive intelligence.

This is an important achievement and a proof of Fiat’s commitment to sustainable mobility:  in the past 6 years, Fiat has reduced its average CO2 emissions by about 13% from 137,3 to 119,8 g/km, a result that is significantly lower than the average target set by the European Union for 2015 (130 g/km).

Among the various technologies introduced throughout the year, the new  0.9 TwinAir Turbo Natural Power engine is a 80 hp bi-fuel (natural gas/gasoline) two-cylinder engine which  combines the ecological advantages of CNG fuel with the power and driving fun of TwinAir technology. The Fiat Panda was the first car in the world to be equipped with this innovative engine which guarantees reduced levels of CO2 (86 g/km), among the lowest value on the market.

Fiat Group has been Europe’s leading producer of Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) natural gas vehicles for more than 15 years. It offers the largest eco-friendly bi-fuel (natural gas/gasoline) range, satisfying the needs of a wide variety of private and commercial consumers.  From 1997 to 2012, Fiat sold more than 500,000 Natural Power cars and commercial vehicles.

In addition to the new engine, Fiat believes that the environmental impact of vehicles is strongly influenced by consumer’s driving behavior. Fiat continues to invest in eco:Drive, an application that improves driving styles by giving personalized recommendations for reducing emissions, saving fuel and quantifying economic advantages. In 2012, the eco:Drive mobile application  was created and made immediate feedback possible through smartphones. With the launch of 500L, the next generation eco:Drive Live was introduced and allows the user to monitor driving style in real time on the radio display.

Today, approximately 90.000 eco:Drive users are saving 5.000 tons of CO2 per year.
