As a systems development partner, Bosch Engineering can take proven Bosch technology from large-scale series production and adapt it to small-scale series and non-automotive applications. The activities of the wholly-owned Bosch subsidiary are focused on developing solutions that work across different domains and systems. Since 1999, Bosch Engineering development and application experts have been supporting their customers all the way from developing concepts to approving series production and from project volumes of one piece upward. “We take the electronics systems from Bosch automotive innovations and adapt them from series production to specific projects. This results in products tailored exactly to the needs of our customers,” explains Bernhard Bihr, the president of Bosch Engineering. “Our services encompass a wide range of applications, including passenger cars and commercial vehicles, construction and agricultural machinery, rail vehicles and powersports, and beyond. In 2012, we realized over 800 different customer projects.”

The Bosch subsidiary’s comprehensive range of services includes powertrains, safety and comfort systems, and the electrical and electronic integration of components. In addition, Bosch Engineering specialists help customers to optimize processes and with project and quality management. Last but not least, the company coordinates the Bosch Group’s motorsport activities. Bosch Engineering employs more than 1,800 people at eleven locations in eight countries and brings experts, developers, and engineers from all areas of Bosch automotive engineering together under one roof.

Comprehensive range of services for powertrain systems
With its powertrain services, Bosch Engineering supports manufacturers of conventional internal-combustion engines, engines powered by alternative fuels, and hybrid and electric drive solutions. The company’s engineers and developers take care of all development tasks, from defining the system design for studies and developing the necessary functions and software to approving series production of control devices in Bosch manufacturing facilities. At the customer’s request, Bosch Engineering can also design the complete powertrain, employing the extensive know-how of its design and prototyping experts. What is more, the electronics specialist not only provides this range of services for passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and off-highway vehicles, but as Bihr explains: “We adapt the electronics of powertrain systems to all vehicles, whether they have two, three, four, or more wheels.” Indeed, no wheels is OK too, as demonstrated by Bosch Engineering’s projects to customize Bosch technology from large-scale series production for use in boats and combined heat and power plants. Bosch Engineering operates a modern test center with engine test benches and dynamometers at its Abstatt location in southern Germany, where the functions it develops can be tested and exhaust and emissions tests can be carried out for all applicable legal requirements worldwide.

Safety, convenience, and electrical and electronic systems
Another area in which Bosch Engineering provides services is vehicle safety and convenience. This includes developing active safety and vehicle-dynamics systems based on the interaction of brakes, steering, and chassis. The company adapts dynamic control strategies to the needs of high-performance sports cars, for instance, and factors in the exceptional weight conditions of special vehicles as well as the extreme environments in which they are used. Greater safety and convenience is provided by radar- and video-based driver assistance systems, which Bosch Engineering also customizes.

And finally, the development of restraint systems and customized solutions for infotainment, navigation, and human-machine interfaces (HMI) rounds off the company’s expertise. Depending on the specific requirements, Bosch Engineering develops customized sensor and algorithm functions, as well as offering its customers systems know-how in the networking of electrical and electronic systems. Its services include designing and improving system architecture, designing on-board communication systems, and assisting with integration.
