Automotive World has recently published a brand new briefing on ‘The prospects for autonomous vehicles

Testing of semi- and fully-autonomous vehicles on public roads became legal in Nevada in March 2012. Similar authorisation is spreading to other US states, enabling several automotive OEMs and Google to log hundreds of thousands of test miles.

OEMs and suppliers are working on differing levels of autonomous driving technology, from advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to fully autonomous cars in which the driver could become, for some or all of the journey, effectively a passenger.

Aspects of the required technology are already in advanced stages of development, and many of the component parts of a fully autonomous driving system are commercially available; nonetheless, there remain numerous major barriers that must be overcome before fully autonomous cars could conceivably appear on public roads, including legislation and general consumer acceptance.

This Automotive World Briefing provides a brief review of technology drivers, challenges, current trials and applications, and considers the implications for the automotive industry.
