The New Car Assessment Program for Southeast Asian Countries (ASEAN NCAP) has published safety ratings for 11 new vehicles available across the ASEAN region.

The results revealed in Phase II of ASEAN NCAP testing show there are a number of strong safety performers across the brands tested. Three five-star safety ratings were awarded, with the remaining eight vehicles tested achieving 4 star ratings.

The Toyota Prius, Honda Civic and Subaru XV all received five stars. Four star ratings were awarded to: the Suzuki Swift; Mazda 2; Mitsubishi Mirage; Toyota Avanza; Perodua Alza;
 Nissan Almera; Daihatsu Xenia; and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.

At their official launch held in Kajang, Malaysia, ASEAN NCAP Steering Committee Chairman Prof. Dr. Wong Shaw Voon described the completion of Phase II as “good news” for all ASEAN consumers “as there are now more cars available with NCAP safety ratings” to help inform their purchasing decisions.

Prof. Dr Wong’s comments were echoed by ANCAP Chief Executive Officer, Mr Nicholas Clarke, who also remarked on the significant progress made by the ASEAN NCAP test program since its inception only two years ago.

“Since the release of Phase I results earlier this year, ASEAN NCAP have not only conducted another round of successful tests, they have also developed strong relationships with manufacturers, approved another lab for testing within the region, and expanded the scope of their test program to include larger people movers and SUVs,” said Mr Clarke.

“The benefits we have seen across Australia and New Zealand as a result of ANCAP testing are sure to be seen across the ASEAN as a result of their growing test program.”

In total, 19 vehicles have been tested by the ASEAN NCAP test program to date. Of these, five have achieved a maximum 5 star safety rating – the Ford Fiesta, Honda City, Toyota Prius, Honda Civic and Subaru XV.
