VW compensation question proves potential quagmire

In late March, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) brought a complaint against Volkswagen Group of America regarding its advertising claims of 'clean diesel' vehicles. Specifically, the FTC is crying unfair play in VW's statements that certain cars were environmentally friendly and low emission, when actually they contained defeat devices that obscured their true, significantly higher, emission levels. The charge is straightforward, but determining the amount of compensation for buyers is anything but.
