US domestic OEMs lagging behind in emissions

Since 2000, emissions standards in the US have led to an 87% reduction in smog-forming tailpipe emissions from the average car or truck, and CO2 emissions from the average vehicle have decreased by nearly 20% since 1998. While some OEMs continue to protest the increasingly stringent measures put in place in order to reduce emissions and pollutants, the measures are clearly working. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), new technologies and tougher standards for fuel efficiency and emissions have resulted in the US’ eight bestselling OEMs all improving their environmental performance.
