Tyre characteristics can have a considerable impact on vehicle fuel economy. Many suppliers have been developing low rolling resistance tyres that minimise friction between tyre and road, allowing vehicles to travel using less power and fuel.
A handful of companies have also been examining ways in which to reduce the aerodynamic drag produced by tyres. Although the vehicle body has traditionally been the centre of attention when it comes to aerodynamics, a number of companies think that improvements in tyre aerodynamics will be increasingly important as the world’s fuel economy and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions targets become more stringent.
