Teleoperation could prove an important piece in the automated truck puzzle

Remote control of self-driving trucks has the potential to solve problems such as the last mile and the labour shortage, but not everyone is convinced. By Xavier Boucherat

Connectivity will prove essential for driverless trucks for a number of reasons: vehicle condition monitoring, high-precision tracking and live feeds of harsh-braking events, unexpected stoppages and collisions are among the features which operators could expect. But a further avenue that connectivity opens up is teleoperation, or remote control. Potential is being explored across multiple segments, with several companies entering the space, but some are turning their attention to trucking in particular.
