Steering wheel-free: pure fantasy, or inevitability?

Some vehicle concepts have now removed what remains of driver input to a vehicle, but how far down this road is the industry likely to go? All the way, say some. By Xavier Boucherat

The transformative potential of self-driving vehicles is leading the automotive industry into uncharted territory, but one issue upon which most industry stakeholders agree is that higher levels of vehicle autonomy will mean a significant improvement in road safety. One need only look to initiatives such as Vision Zero for indications of confidence - the multi-national road-safety campaign, supported by OEMs and suppliers, aims to eliminate traffic-related deaths and serious injuries in the coming years.
