Connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) promise to rewrite the rules of transportation and numerous companies are trialling new technology around the world. Australia is keen to support these developments for their potential societal benefits, particularly regarding road safety, transport efficiency and environmental impact. However, it does not intend to rely on testing results from other parts of the world. In some cases, its unique road conditions and vehicle applications mean that only local testing can provide accurate feedback.
