Speak easy: natural speech recognition essential for reducing driver distraction

Voice recognition remains an imperfect technology, but improvements in natural speech recognition could help realise distraction reduction benefits. By Xavier Boucherat

In theory, voice command technology offers automakers a way of creating multi-functional cockpit experiences with connected services and more, without affecting a driver’s ability to concentrate on the road. However, this assertion has come under fire in the past: a pair of 2015 studies by the University of Utah found that drivers could take up to 27 seconds to return their full attention to the road after using voice commands to perform tasks such as phone-calls, or turning on the radio.
