Sooner than we think: Volvo’s Vera concept is anything but far-fetched

At first glance, Volvo Truck’s Vera concept is a shocking departure from the norm, but with logistics centres only set to grow busier, it already makes perfect sense. By Xavier Boucherat

Self-driving vehicles are no longer the stuff of science fiction, but whilst the technologies continue to advance, some flaws in the industry’s plans to roll out autonomy have become clear. One important question concerns the hinterland between assisted driving and fully autonomous driving, or SAE Level 3. As the Arizona Uber crash of March 2018 demonstrated, an autonomous system that requires continuous human supervision could be asking for trouble: some drivers struggle to keep their attention on the road when in full control of a vehicle, let alone in a situation where the driving task is removed.
