Safe and efficient: autonomous trucking from the supplier perspective

The trucks may bear the manufacturers’ names, but the suppliers have a major role to play. By Josh Wickham

Although passenger cars steal most of the headlines regarding the development of autonomous vehicles, the technology will have a considerable impact on the commercial vehicle (CV) sector.

For some time, the diminished workforce within the trucking industry has struggled to meet the demands of growing consumer demand. Recently, automated trucking systems have been increasingly seen as a solution to the workforce challenge, but they also have the potential to improve safety, efficiency and sustainability across the industry. The truck manufacturers may have their names displayed on the vehicle, but it is the suppliers of a truck’s various systems and components that are just as significant in the development of a truck’s autonomous capabilities.
