Mitsubishi Fuso’s trucks are heading for Level 4

A collective effort within Daimler is allowing those involved to maximise their autonomous development. By Jack Hunsley

For automakers competing in the commercial vehicle sector, autonomous trucks have become more than just a quirky prototype to display at events. The commercial, environmental and cost benefits of automating heavy-duty vehicles has opened up a whole new battlefield for the big players in the industry to make their mark on the future of mobility. Outside of Western Europe and the American market, one player keen to gain a head start is Daimler’s Mitsubishi Fuso, with the company recently announcing its intention to introduce a Level 2 capable heavy-duty truck to the market in 2019. This effort and Mitsubishi Fuso’s development plan is being shaped by collaboration within Daimler and working alongside the Japanese government as it moves towards setting a date for allowing Level 4 vehicles on Japanese roads.
