Millions of US vehicles added to Takata recalls

Toyota and Mercedes-Benz are the latest to expand recalls, with around 2.4 million additional vehicles taken off the road between them, writes Freddie Holmes

The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced earlier in May that it would expand recalls involving defective Takata airbags, with an additional 35 to 40 million vehicles to be recalled in five phases by December 2019. Both Daimler and Toyota have since confirmed they are bringing in more vehicles as a precautionary measure, based on information from Takata and NHTSA.

Daimler has called back 705,000 Mercedes-Benz passenger cars and another 136,000 vans, while Toyota is bringing in 1,584,000 vehicles, which include the Scion and Lexus brands. Combined, the two OEMs are recalling an additional 2.4 million vehicles.
