Last mile logistics is changing – the delivery sector must react

The major delivery companies are going nowhere, says Colorado-based start-up Veho, but online retailers like Amazon are forcing change in the last mile. By Xavier Boucherat

The US Commerce Department estimates that the nation’s total e-commerce sales added up to around US$453.5bn in 2017, representing a 16% increase on 2016’s figure of US$391bn. Online retail continues to grow, and with it, customer expectations. Average delivery times have dropped through the years: in the case of Amazon, most items arrive within two to three days, and the company keeps pushing: its premium Prime service offers free next day delivery, and residents in some cities can now opt for same-day delivery.
