Teleoperation is more than just remote control of vehicles, argues one of the sector’s dedicated specialists—particularly for mobility services, such as shuttles and ride-pooling. By Xavier Boucherat

It can be reasonably argued that the enthusiasm around autonomous vehicles has waned a little in recent years. Incidents like the 2018 self-driving Uber crash, or the multiple crashes tied to Tesla Autopilot, have not helped. Whilst they cannot be said to have dampened automaker and industry ambitions, they have underlined the fact that many corner cases remain, and that in the unpredictable setting of the real world, humans remain the superior driver.
